Examination of the structural behaviour
The examination of the expansion behavior of balloon-expandable stents yields important results for stent development, and for the clinical application. The computer controlled measuring system, developed at the Testing Laboratory, consisting of a laser scanner, a pressure control device and a linear actuator, permits the assessment of the stent profile over the entire stent length a predefined pressure steps. It is also possible to evaluate the distal, the middle and the proximal part of the stent separately, according to EN 14299.
The measured profile curves give detailed information of the expansion behavior (structural behavior) of the stents. The pressure-diameter characteristic is of high relevance for the clinical application and the implant security of the stents.
Strukturverhalten
Of particular interest with selfexpanding stents is their radial outward force, or respectively the radial strength, which the stent exerts on the wall of the vessel.. The procedure implemented at the Testing Laboratory permits the simultaneous recording of the diameter of the stent (expansion diameter) and the respective radial force in a dedicated test equipment (Zwick, type BZ2.5/TN1S). The examination is conducted at 37°C.
